FAQ
Questions about the work, the process, or an order — answered below. If you don't find what you need, reach out at kelly@funabashi.studio.
Original Paintings
-
Yes — every original painting is unique and made once. When a painting sells it is gone. No reproductions are made of original works unless they are offered as fine art prints, which are listed separately in the shop.
-
The ink paintings are made with hand-foraged and hand-mixed artisanal inks — including black walnut, pokeberry, buckthorn berry, copper oxide, acorn, turmeric, and wild grape — on Arches cold press watercolor paper, 140lb/300gsm. Other originals are made in watercolor, pastel, colored pencil, and mixed media on archival paper.
-
The foraged inks are natural and organic, which means they have varying degrees of lightfastness. Pokeberry and buckthorn in particular are known to fade over time when exposed to direct sunlight. To preserve your painting, keep it out of direct sunlight and in a stable environment. Display behind UV-protective glass for best results. This is part of the nature of working with wild, foraged materials — the paintings carry the character of the living things they came from.
-
Yes. Each painting is stamped on the front with the artist's Japanese last name in archival ink, and stamped on the back with the Funabashi Studio seal. The type of ink used, where it was foraged, the approximate date of creation, and an ID number are inscribed by hand and signed with a fountain pen on the back of each piece.
-
Each painting is carefully sealed in a cellophane bag and loosely rolled into a USPS Priority Mail tube. When it arrives, remove it gently from the tube, unroll it carefully, and give it time to rest and flatten. Orders ship within 48 hours and you will receive tracking information by email. We ship within the US — if you're outside the US and interested in a piece, reach out at kelly@funabashi.studio and we'll do our best to make it work.
-
Keep the painting away from direct sunlight, humidity, and extreme temperature changes. Store flat or framed behind UV-protective glass. Do not roll for storage long-term. Handle by the edges and avoid touching the painted surface.
-
Commissions are considered on a case-by-case basis. Reach out via the contact page with details about what you have in mind — subject, size, and any reference images — and we'll go from there.
-
All original painting sales are final. If your painting arrives damaged, please photograph the damage and packaging immediately and contact kelly@funabashi.studio within 48 hours of receipt.
