Original Abstract Ink Painting 22" x 30"

$298.00

Original brushy abstract ink painting in artisanal ink, pokeberry, black walnut, wild grape, and copper oxide.

Size |  22x30 inches | 55 cm x 76 cm

Paper  |  Arches Aquarelle Watercolour - Acuarela | Cold Pressed. 300 g/m - 140 lb

BASHI | The movement of brush strokes is evocative of how our stronger emotions turn, change, and alchemize us.  Using both hands, dragging a large dry brush across the surface to get just the right amount of lines.  Soaked, heavy, wet, bristles, watching it move slowly as the ink lessens to a feather touch, with barely any left.

POKEBERRY BERRY INK | Pokeberry weeds grow in untamed front yards and neglected backyard alleyways in Astoria. Fuchsia stems and warm purple berries stand out against the Corinthian-bleached white railing.  As you pick the berries, their juice bursts into your fingers, leaving a saturated fuchsia stain on your hands, making you feel like a murderer. Gliding on the paper as the hottest pink, drying and darkening into a beautiful aubergine or wine, pokeberry ink is the ultimate in pure botanical saturated color.

BLACK WALNUT INK | Sunrise run, a craggy old tree silhouetted against the backdrop of the East River. Yellowy green globes with brown-black spots, gently bobbing at the ends of finger-like branches, smashing them open with a hammer, taking the desecrated fruit, boiling, mashing, straining until a beautiful, rich black-brown color glides across the paper.

COPPER OXIDE INK | A large glass container, a few copper sponges, a well-ventilated room, some vinegar, some salt, careful tending through night and day and in and out of weeks to achieve this wild turquoise color. First, pale and barely visible upon the pebbly paper, drying into a bright turquoise, pooling at the edges. A playful ink painted on the pokeberry acts as a bleach, changing it from deep purple to a warm, tea-stained brown.

WILD GRAPE INK | Back and forth, pushing a stroller, cheering on a scooter, traveling the same paths, you notice your surroundings in more detail. A beautiful old house, a for-sale sign in front, old grape vines wrap around an iron fence—muffled music from a white sedan, a man in a tracksuit on the phone talking excitedly. Casually talking to my Mom on the phone, I take out a gallon bag, parting leaves, gently plucking them, sticky hands, careful not to get stung by the buzzing bees.  Rinsing with cold water, removing city grime, stainless steel bowl, and potato masher, straining and funneling into a delicate, syrupy sweet smelling, lavender ink.

PACKAGING | Each painting is stamped with archival ink, with the artist's Japanese last name on the front and a Funabashi studio stamp on the back. The types of ink used, where they were found, the approximate date of creation, and an ID number are all meticulously inscribed by hand and signed with a fountain pen, ensuring the accuracy and authenticity of each piece.
