Winged sumac — Rhus copallinum — a native shrub named for the distinctive winged ridges that run along its leaf stems. One of the showiest plants on the Rockaway Peninsula in autumn, its leaves turning a deep, saturated crimson-red that stops people mid-walk. Its dense clusters of small red berries persist through winter, feeding birds long after everything else has gone bare. Beautiful in every season and entirely overlooked most of the time.
