Modern Rhythms Ink Painting 12"x16"
Original, modern rhythms ink painting created with artisanal ink, pokeberry, black walnut & buckthorn.
Size | 12x16 inches | 31 cm x 41 cm
Paper | Arches Aquarelle Watercolour - Acuarela | Cold Pressed. 300 g/m - 140 lb
STYLE
RHYTHMS | Layer upon layer, stroke upon stroke, ink glides across the paper. Shifting the paper in my hands, looking for reflections of wet ink, making sure it's dry before adding more and tracing the ink-dried paper with my finger, trying to determine the direction of the future layer, feeling out what resonates. The layers mimic the days: drops offs, walks, berry picking, conversations, painting, strollers, making ink, thrifting for treasure, cooking dinner, one on top of the other, till one day ends and a new one begins.
INK
POKEBERRY BERRY INK | Pokeberry weeds grow in untamed front yards and neglected backyard alleyways in Astoria. Fuchsia stems and warm purple berries stand out against the Corinthian-bleached white railing. As you pick the berries, their juice bursts into your fingers, leaving a saturated fuchsia stain on your hands, making you feel like a murderer. Gliding on the paper as the hottest pink, drying and darkening into a beautiful aubergine or wine, pokeberry ink is the ultimate in pure botanical saturated color.
BUCKTHORN BERRY INK | Green, blue, or purple? Buckthorn berries are the wild card ink. Small, plump, bright green berries slowly turn to a deep, purply blue. The initial ink made is blueish. Lye is added to half the ink, creating a beautiful sage green color. Never has it been the same color twice. Preserving tiny seeds & ephemera as it's painted.
BLACK WALNUT INK | Sunrise run, a craggy old tree silhouetted against the backdrop of the East River. Yellowy green globes with brown-black spots, gently bobbing at the ends of finger-like branches, smashing them open with a hammer, taking the desecrated fruit, boiling, mashing, straining until a beautiful, rich black-brown color glides across the paper.
PACKAGING | Each painting is stamped with archival ink, with the artist's Japanese last name on the front and a Funabashi studio stamp on the back. The types of ink used, where they were found, the approximate date of creation, and an ID number are all meticulously inscribed by hand and signed with a fountain pen, ensuring the accuracy and authenticity of each piece.
